Senior Center

Tucked inside the heart of the Buckingham Community Center, the Senior Center is quickly becoming one of the community’s most cherished gathering places. With membership steadily growing, more and more local seniors are discovering that this welcoming space offers far more than just a weekly meeting—it offers connection, enrichment, and adventure.

“If they’re looking for a group to fellowship with, they can come here,” said Recreation Assistant Wendy Spivey. “We would love for you to join us.”

The group meets every Tuesday, bringing members together for a variety of engaging activities designed to keep minds active and friendships strong. Spivey works with a board of the Buckingham seniors to develop plans for the whole group. The board, early participants in the group who were elected by their fellow members, give Spivey ideas on where they’d like to go, speakers they’d like to see and other activities they’d like to do within the group, including events like the upcoming prom in May.

“They try to come up with things that are targeted at seniors,” Spivey said, adding that she then handles the rest.

Booking informative guest speakers who share insights on health, history, safety, and local resources as well as different hands-on activities and social time, there is always something happening to spark interest and conversation. Beyond the weekly gatherings, members also enjoy planned trips throughout the region. Day excursions to area attractions give participants a chance to explore new places without the stress of planning. For those feeling a bit more adventurous, overnight trips add an extra layer of excitement and camaraderie, creating lasting memories along the way.

While the atmosphere is warm and inviting, participation does require membership. This ensures that the program can continue to grow while offering consistent, quality experiences for those involved. The group voted on its admittance fee, which is a raffle fundraiser where each member must sell a booklet of tickets.

To become a member, head to the community center and ask for Spivey. Make Tuesdays the highlight of your week too!
