DESCRIPTION:As the sun dips low and the night draws near\, we humans usually turn in for the night…but this is show-time for bats! Join us to celebrate these amazing animals during this special series in collaboration with Bat Conservation & Rescue of Virginia. You’ll get a rare chance to come face-to-face with these mysterious creatures\, learn all about them from local bat rehabilitators\, and identify bats in flight using specialized sound-detecting equipment. \nThis program will be conducted under a covered shelter with seating and includes optional slow-paced walking. The evening will begin with an informational talk about these unique animals\, bat-themed crafts\, and face painting\, and conclude with a walk to detect bats as they come out for early-evening hunting. For three days\, some of the finest historical interpreters around come together on the banks of the James to recreate scenes of rural life in Virginia circa 1850. We have been working with the International Dark Sky Association to do our part in protecting our night skies from light pollution\, and we invite you to celebrate this wonderful accomplishment with us. \nOur volunteer astronomers will have telescopes available for an up-close view of planets and galaxies\, but you may also bring your own telescope to explore these amazing wonders of the night sky with our knowledgeable staff as your guide. A presentation will be available in the case of cloudy conditions. \nPlease meet at Shelter #4. All materials provided. Suitable for all ages. Wear appropriate clothing and shoes for the weather and bring a water bottle with you.
