Be Safe: Amish Buggies in Buckingham County

If you’re driving anywhere in Buckingham County on a Sunday, you are very likely to encounter a horse-drawn buggy driven by an Amish neighbor.

While Amish buggies are observed around the county every day, the numbers are higher on Sundays, when many are traveling to and from church services.

Toga Volunteer Fire Department has distributed the following reminders on its social media pages to help keep buggies safe in Buckingham County:

  • When you see a buggy, slow down and allow for extra braking distance.
  • Don’t pass until it’s safe to do so with a clear view around the buggy, preferably in a passing zone.
  • Remember, there are likely to be children riding inside a buggy.
  • Don’t hog or tailgate, rev your engine or blow your horns when passing. These aggressive actions can frighten the horses, startle the driver, and upset young passengers. Several Amish are firefighters in Buckingham County’s fire departments and others are associate members supporting
